Most Teen Magazines are Bullshit. This One Is Not.

Teen magazines are bullshit, basically. They all pretty much look like this ~

Teen Vogue & Seventeen Magazine covers. Images from the web.

and that’s before you get to the taglines on the cover. Makeup! Fashion! Celebs! Oh My! It’s a check list of how to be, look, dress, and think, based on the opinions of editors who mostly look like older versions of the people on the cover. It’s cool, I guess, for some girls…but what about girls like us? You know, the ones who write poetry & rap, who design clothes & dance, who run businesses already? Who come in various shades and hues? Girls who like celebs and all…but aren’t overly impressed by them. Girls who are imperfect, but beautiful still. Girls who can have issues (don’t we all!) and dreams at the same damn time? Girls who prefer inspiration to instruction? Girls who are proud of where they come from & will be forever, no matter where they end up? Homegirls. Like us…

That magazine didn’t exist. And now, it does.

Homegirl NYC Issues 1 & 2

To be very clear. We are about celebrating the lives of girls of color & make no apologies for that. We didn’t see ourselves represented at all (and certainly not very well), so instead of begging for a place in other magazines, we created our own. This is it. Hope you like it! But even if you don’t, we’ll still be here anyway…“tearing ish up…giving a muthafcuk!” as Tupac would say ; )
